Alvada is a blend of rich honeyed Malmsey and drier Bual which gives some acidic backbone to the wine. Dressed in an ultra contempory bottle, Blandy's deserve credit for attempting to update this very traditional yet delicious drink.

Madeira
A beautiful sub-tropical island, administered by Portugal, situated in the Atlantic Ocean to the west of Morocco. The island’s rocky terrain means that many vineyards are arranged in precarious terraces.
Madeira is famed for its unique fortified wine created by the estufagem process. Fortified white wine is heated gradually over a period of months and deliberately madirized, producing the burnt sugar flavours and the distinct nuttiness that characterises Madeira. The bulk of the island’s production is basic (for cooking) three year old Madeira made from the Tinta Negra Mole. Reserva wines are named after four noble grape varieties, but nowadays denote the style of wine rather than the grapes that make it. Sercial is the lightest, driest style. Verdelho wines are sweeter, often gold in colour deepening with maturity. Bual is fat, rich Madeira and is darker still. Malmsey Madeira is the sweetest and most opulent and is produced from black and white Malvasia grapes.
