Marlborough
This is the modern home of modern Sauvignon Blanc. The region has fostered a cult following, not least for the well marketed Cloudy Bay. It is the largest of New Zealand’s producing regions in terms of hectares and is still rapidly expanding.
Marlborough is at the northern tip of South Island and is New Zealand’s most famous region. Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is certainly its greatest asset. The gravelly soil and dry, sunny climate also make it ideal for Chardonnay, the region’s second most important grape, of which a small proportion is used for making Champagne look-alike, classic method sparkling wines (notably Deutz and Montana). Riesling is also highly successful here, if less well known and reaches its zenith as unctuously sweet botrytised dessert wine.

"This is one of the world's great sparkling wines because it offers the mysterious paradox of finnese yet flavour, delicacy yet decisiveness" Malcolm Gluck, The Guardian.
