Sicily
This island has progressed from the almost medieval to the futuristically modern in a matter of three decades. Sicily has always been a prodigious wine producer, but now it has become viticulturally important as a quality wine producer.
Until recently Sicily was known only for its Mafia, Marsala and bulk wine production. With massive Government grants and investment from New World producers, large co-operatives produce good, reliable, modern wines and smaller producers have taken advantage of the interest in the area to make excellent wines (mostly white) and revive interest in the sweet Moscato di Pantelleria. DOC regulations have yet to catch up with these headlong advances and as a result many of these excellent wines are marketed under IGT status.
