Rhone
Still the least recognised of the three classic wine regions of France. After many years on the sidelines, there was a revival of interest in the Rhone in the late 1980s when wine drinkers rediscovered its beefy, rich and spicy world class wines.
White Wines:- White wines from the Rhone are rich and full-flavoured be they gloriously perfumed Viognier from Condrieu, fruity Marsanne Roussanne blends from the south or the complex spicy whites of Hermitage and Chateauneuf du Pape.
Red Wines:- The Rhone is essentially divided into two. In the northern half there is an intense concentration on stretching the potential of Syrah to its highest limits. The tiny appellations of Cote Rotie, Hermitage and Cornas show how concentrated, complex and long-lived Syrah wines can be. They are the big guns of the region. In the southern Rhone are the larger, more productive appellations such as the Cotes du Rhone, Gigondas, and the renowned Chateauneuf-du-Pape. There are thirteen permitted varieties for these wines although Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault dominate. The wines from the region have a long history of tradition and in the hands of conscientious producers, they can be absolutely stunning.
