Piemonte (Piedmont)
A diverse region, where tradition and craftsmanship are prized, and the native varieties reign. Production may be comparatively low, but the list of world famous classics is long - Barolo and Barbaresco are most revered.
Their styles are divided by traditional and modernist philosophies, though quality is the key in both camps. Key grape varieties are Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Moscato. Piemonte is also the home of the much misunderstood and unfashionable Asti Spumante and the recently popular Moscato d’Asti as well as an array of well-made indigenous white wines such as Gavi, Arneis, and Favorita. Some of the more adventurous producers are also making forays into international varieties (Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir) with great success.
