Loire
The Loire is the longest river in France and along its course the varying soils produce several distinctly different styles of wine, with many famous names in wine.
At its mouth on the Atlantic the area is famed for its refreshing, instantly drinkable Muscadet. Further inland the Chenin Blanc grape takes over to produce both sparkling Saumur and also some of the longest-lived, most subtle, botrytised dessert wines in the world, such as Vouvray and Coteaux du Layon. In Touraine and further upriver at the Central Vineyards of Sancerre and Pouilly Fume you can find the true home of Sauvignon Blanc. Here it produces lean wines that are wonderfully crisp, minerally and bone dry. The Loire is also the only region to specialise in the red variety Cabernet Franc. In Chinon, Saumur-Champigny and Bourgeuil they make dry, light, herbaceous and soft wines that are best consumed young. The Loire has an amazing range of wines and their little-known dessert wines are especially worth exploring.
