Languedoc-Roussillon
This enormous area stretches across the south of France from the Pyrenees to the mouth of the Rhone, encompassing the well-known areas of Corbieres, Minervois and Faugeres.
For decades Languedoc-Roussillon was a vast sink of mediocre wines which filled the EU wine lake. Around ten years ago the light dawned that it didn’t have to be this way. Trained winemakers and viticulturists realised that it was a perfect region for producing high quality wines and that inappropriate varieties, lack of investment and a rather parochial attitude was all that was holding the area back. Gradually with overseas investment the region woke up. Flying winemakers appeared, vineyards were replanted and technology came to the wineries. The New World influence has been huge and experimentation has led to a broad range of modern, exciting wines of excellent value and quality at both Vin de Pays and AC level.
