Trentino-Alto Adige
This is the mountainous, most northerly region of Italy. Alto Adige is a semi-autonomous region with a culture so Germanic that they think of Italy as a foreign country and refer to their region as the Sudtirol.
Alto-Adige has a rising reputation for its wine and almost all those produced qualify for DOC status. The emphasis is on red wines of both indigenous and classic varieties, however over the last 20 years they have produced many successful international white varieties to great acclaim. Trentino lies just south of Alto Adige, was ceded to Italy only after the First World War and is now mostly Italian-speaking. Although they make mostly varietal DOC wines (from, amongst others, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Bianco, and Chardonnay, their greatest success lies with the five million bottles of classic method Spumante that they produce annually.
