Rioja
It is the region of Rioja that has made Spainish wines famous. Most of the wines have traditionally been red, and recognisable by the influence of long ageing in cask, although this is being challenged by a modern school who are relying less on wood casks.
They also make whites and here too the traditional oak ageing is giving way to a cleaner, fresher version with more fruit and no wood. The region lies in central northern Spain and it was the first demarcated DO wine region in 1926. In 1991 it was also the first region to receive DOC (Denominacion de Origen Calificada) status, reserved for wines of the highest quality. The region is divided into three sub-zones: Rioja Alavesa, Rioja Alta and Rioja Baja. The first two zones produce the more delicate styles, with Rioja Baja making the more robust.
