Aragon
Lying in the north east of Spain, many of the local co-operatives have undergone modernisation; small, sophisticated boutique wineries have sprung up, and international as well as new clones of the traditional varieties have been planted.
Aragon has 70,000 hectares under vine and is amazingly prolific, producing roughly 10.5 million cases of wine every year. Historically it has been known for producing rough, high alcohol wines, which were mostly used for blending or consumed locally. Recent modernisation has brought new clones of Garnacha and Tempranillo and Garnacha roses from Carinena. There are also full-bodied, concentrated reds from Calatayud and modern, international-style single varietals from Somontano.
