Argentina continues to produce good value wines like this soft, fruity easy-drinking red.

Mendoza Mendoza is the most important viticultural region of Argentina. Malbec was traditionally the most important variety here but it is declining in favour of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo. Mendoza lies directly across the Andes from Santiago in Chile and is Argentina’s largest region producing most of the first rate wines of the country and two thirds of the country’s overall output. Yield reduction and grubbing up of vines has improved quality and Mendoza is chasing hard on the heels of Chile as South America’s premier region. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc are becoming increasingly common in the higher vineyards and the wines are crisp and fresh. There has been a great deal of overseas investment from companies such as Lurton, Suter, Moet & Chandon and Piper-Heidsieck, leading to an improvement in winery technology and wine quality.
